1. Not Properly Cleaning First
When you are in the process of painting your ceiling, it’s important to know that you should have a foundation that is prepared and part of that means that you should clean the area that is going to be paintd.
The reason this is the case is that it’s a smooth surface that is best for painting, and if you start off with a ceiling that still has all of the various dirt and grime that accumulates over time, you are not going to be able to do this properly.
2. Not Sanding First
As mentioned above, having a smooth surface is important to your painting — and another way to be sure that you will have a surface that is as smooth as possible is to sand before painting.
Primarily, you should sand before applying the coat of primer paint, but you can if you wish sand in between coats — between the coat of the primer and the first coat of paint as well as the first coat and the second coat of paint.

One is to use an extender of some sort — there are some that are as simple as a broom handle, depending on the kind of paint roller that you get.
The other that we would suggest is to use a ladder, rather than attempt to build some sort of makeshift scaffolding system involving things to elevate planks as well as planks — this is far more dangerous and considerably less portable.
5. Using An Overly Long Telescoping Extender
Telescoping extenders are good for reaching the ceiling, but you are doing yourself a disservice if you get one that is too long.
The problem with an overly long extender is that the more of the extension that is in the handle (rather than being used in bringing the paint roller to the ceiling) the harder it will be to hold the handle as it will have much of the weight of the extender in it.
As a result, it will be that much more difficult to paint the ceiling when you have a heavier handle.
6. Using The Wrong Kind Of Paint
There are paints meant for painting the interior of your home, but there are certain paints that are specifically meant for your ceiling.
These tend to be more flat and will not drip nearly as much as other interior paint — but it will still drip to some extent, so you have to be aware of that.
7. Not Using Stain Blocking Primer
As good of a job as you may do in cleaning your ceiling, you can always benefit from a little help in terms of blocking the residual stains that may remain.
