Primer is good to apply to the surface that is going to be painted because it is a better surface upon which the paint can be applied than the actual surface of the walls you are looking to paint.
Primer is better in terms of adhesion and a paint job that is applied to a coat of primer will end up lasting longer than paint that is applied to a surface without primer.
